  Postnatal Yoga

Welcome on the other side of birth! Join other new moms for a Baby & Me yoga class focused on nurturing your body after birth.

A class designed for women wishing to explore the benefits of yoga postpartum, as well creating a safe and fun environment to bond and play with your baby and - with other moms. In this class we'll stretch and rebuild muscle tone while babies can participate with their parent throughout the class. Using a playful and loving style, you will learn infant massage and stretches for baby which create a unique and joyful class.

A typical class is focusing in particular on toning the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, with attention to special post-pregnancy recovery. The class structure is very relaxed. Mothers can practice yoga while their babies sleep, engage them while practicing different poses or take a break when they feed. Most importantly, our Baby and Me classes are a great way for new mothers to replenish physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

After class we serve tea with cookies and take time for swapping stories and sharing the amazing creative genius that mothers embody as they learn the tricks of the trade of mothering. No prior yoga experience necessary. Every class covers different topics and the class includes a folder of useful handouts, local DC resource tips and fact sheets relevant to new moms living in DC. Yoga is the practice of uniting mind, body and spirit. Sharing this special time with your baby creates a peaceful, stress free and fun hour that will last long after the class is over.

Additional Info

The Babies

Babies from 5 weeks until about 1 year old are welcome. Throughout the class, you will have the option of involving your baby in the movements, by holding him or her, or by having your baby close to you on your blanket.

Babies love to be amongst a group of people where there is lots going on and they are usually happiest when they come along for the ride! This is how they learn about the world.

The Moms

When is it time to bounce back after baby?  It is recommended that students check with their physician or midwife prior to class, especially after a c-section. We recommend 6 weeks after an uncomplicated birth before resuming regular exercise.

The Instructor

The instructor Katja Brandis is a former nurse, certified postpartum doula (baby nurse) and birth assistant, childbirth educator and infant massage instructor.
